Online Proctoring FAQs

How do I schedule my exam?
All exam appointments are made through your NCARB Record.
Yes. Your online proctored exam is secured in several ways to protect the integrity of the exam and the safety of your personal data. PSI uses virtual lock-down browser technology with enhanced communication security and encryption. The lock-down browser restricts your ability to open and use additional windows or programs during the exam session. Your personally identifiable information is always protected. PSI only has access to the webcam and audio on your computer until you close the online proctoring software application. As part of the check-in process, you will be required to take a real-time video of your testing environment to ensure compliance and secure your workspace. PSI proctors are trained to detect violations of test taker policies, and any breach of protocol will result in the termination of your exam.
You can test in the convenience of your home, school, or office. Wherever you test, you should be in a walled room where you will not be disturbed. No one else is permitted in the room with you while you are testing.

You are required to present a valid, government-issued photo ID as part of the check-in process. Your ID must contain your full name and a recent, recognizable photo.

Please Note: Military IDs are not accepted for Online Proctored exams.

Please review the System Requirements. You will need to be able to install PSI’s Secure Browser on your computer to take the test. If you are on a corporate computer that does not allow program installation, you may want to take the test at home instead.
The check in process will take approximately 10-15 minutes. Being late for your scheduled exam is not permitted. To allow time for the check-in process, please be ready when the online check-in window opens, 30 minutes before your exam begins. If you are late, you will be counted as a no-show, and your exam fees will be forfeited.
You will be asked to take a video of your work area during the check-in process, which will be reviewed by security prior to exam launch. Please ensure that you are in a well-lit room so that your workspace can be reviewed – artificial lighting is recommended.
  • Please ensure that your desk space is clear and clean of any items, that there are no notes or descriptions posted on the walls in the room, and, overall, no items or information in the room that could be considered cheating materials. Other items in the background, provided that they are not accessed during the exam, are fine. For example, having books on a bookcase in the background is not a problem provided that you do not access them.
No. You may not receive any assistance from other individuals while taking the exam, and you may not allow other individuals to see your computer screen when exam questions are being presented.

Examples of prohibited behavior include, but are not limited to: Looking off the screen Mumbling or speaking aloud Using unauthorized materials as listed in the section below Interacting with third parties intentionally or unintentionally Leaving the circle of view of the webcam  The proctor will investigate the event and then release your exam so that you may continue after re- accepting the Terms and Conditions. If you have any questions about the pause or release of your exam, you can chat with your proctor directly.

NCARB and the ARE

About NCARB

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ membership is made up of the architectural licensing boards of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. NCARB, in collaboration with these boards, facilitates the licensure and credentialing of architects to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

To achieve these goals, NCARB works with its Member Boards and volunteers to develop and facilitate standards for licensure, including the national examination and experience program. NCARB also recommends regulatory guidelines for licensing boards and helps architects expand their professional reach through the NCARB Certificate.

What is the ARE?

The Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) is developed by NCARB. The ARE is used by U.S. jurisdictions as the registration examination for candidates seeking architectural registration. It is also accepted by select Canadian provincial and territorial architectural associations for registration.

The ARE assesses a candidate’s knowledge and skills to provide various services required in the practice of architecture. No single examination can test for competency in all aspects of architectural practice; the ARE is not intended for that purpose. The ARE concentrates on the professional services that affect the public’s health, safety, and welfare.

In addition to testing for competence in specific subject areas, NCARB is aware of the responsibilities an architect may have for coordinating the activities of others involved in the design/construction process. The ARE assesses a candidate’s qualifications in exercising the skills and judgment of a generalist working with numerous specialists.
